CoMaps at State of the Map 2026

At the end of August, OpenStreetMap's global State of the Map conference took place in Paris. It brought together over 500 participants from around the world for presentations, workshops, and discussions all around open maps and related topics. And this year, CoMaps was represented in person as well, both by some of our contributors and users, all of which had never met in person before!

To celebrate the opportunity, we held a small CoMaps meetup over a shared lunch during the conference. This allowed us to have a space to get to know each other face-to-face instead of having to rely on text and video chats. People discussed feature ideas, how they would love to contribute going forward, and how they make use of CoMaps. In fact, the chats were so lively and encaptivating that we even forgot to take any photos of our get-together!

In addition to informally socialising, two of our contributors – Diego and Bastian – gave a talk about Comaps. Jointly, they outlined the history of the project, how we work together and try to be a good citizen of the OSM world, and about latest work-in-progress. Beyond the recording of the talk, you can also find their slide deck online.

State of the Map was also a great opportunity to exchange with others working on OSM-related projects, learning from each other and exploring how to work more closely together. For example, the folks behind Cartes.app gave a talk about their online maps and, based on what we heard from each other, we now want to explore how to integrate each other's work more closely. To begin with, something we would like to determine is whether in the future users could be able to synchronize their bookmarks/favorites with the web version.

We also used the opportunity of being surrounded by a large audience of OSM and map experts to get feedback on some new beta features that are in development, in particular for displaying indoor maps and including open reviews from Mangrove Reviews. For the former, the feedback was invaluable to further iterate and refine the feature, and the latter has already landed in the regular app release!

We brought a large pile of stickers to share - which will also be available at future conferences!

Overall, State of a Map was a brilliant experience for us personally and the project.

And we already have some more conferences marked in our calendars in which we are planning to talk about CoMaps:

Akademy-es, scheduled 23-25th October in Madrid.
State of the Map Latin America, which will happen October 27-29th in Mexico City.
State of the Map España, taking place November 6-7th also in Madrid.

CoMaps at FLISoL Córdoba 2026

Together with UN Maps Community Ambassador Silvina Meritano, CoMaps contributor Bastian attended the 22nd edition of the Festival Latinoamericano Instalación Software Libre in Córdoba, Argentina to give a talk titled Mapear para y desde la comunidad: usar y contribuir a OpenStreetMap. In it, they covered what OpenStreetMap is, why we need it, and different ways of how to make use of the data in OSM and how to contribute to it.

As part of this, they showcased CoMaps as a simple way of accessing OSM data offline, including for navigation, and demonstrated how CoMaps can be used to easily make contributions back to OSM, to help improve maps for everyone.

CoMaps at esLibre 2026

CoMaps contributors and volunteers Diego Miguel Lozano and Álex attended the 2026 edition of esLibre, which took place on April 17/18 in Melide in Spain. Together they presented CoMaps in their presentation CoMaps Aplicación de mapas offline centrada en la privacidad, talking about the history of the project, how it is governed, its features and the code base of the project.

CoMaps at HOTOSM Tech & Innovation Working Group

CoMaps contributors and volunteers Anton and Bastian joined monthly meeting of the Tech & Innovation Working Group of Humanitarian OpenStreetMap on April 14 and presented the work of CoMaps. In their brief talk CoMaps: a community-made map app for Android, iOS & Linux, they gave some background about how CoMaps came together as a community, the applications themselves, and how some of the newly developed features of CoMaps could be used in humanitarian settings.
